Low Vaginal Moisture
Decrease in vaginal moisture is also called vaginal dryness in women which occurs almost after menopause. Apart from this menopause, other reasons like certain medications, certain cancer treatments, stress and anxiety and many more can cause low vaginal moisture.
Reduced vaginal moisture is usually caused by low levels of estrogen. Since, estrogen hormone in women helps in making the vaginal lining always moist, thick and flexible. However, it is a common sexual dysfunction in women; for this the patient needs to take measures. This sexual problem causes pain during intercourse, which reduces sexual desire. Not only has this, due to less moisture in the vagina, the woman also faced difficulty in doing physical activities like sports and sitting etc. This also increases the risk of vaginal infection in the sexual life of women.
Causes of Reduced Vaginal Moisture
The decline in estrogen levels in women causes a decrease in vaginal moisture. Whenever menopause approaches, estrogen levels begin to decline.
The ovaries produce estrogen hormone, and this hormone controls the development of female body characteristics such as body shape, breast, and other. It also plays an important role to maintain menstruation cycle and conceive.
Estrogen hormone also helps the tissues lining the vagina thick, moisturized, and healthy. In case of decline of this hormone level, the lining becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic. In fact, these changes are also known as vaginal atrophy.
There are several reasons for low estrogen levels in women:
- Menopause
- Surgical removal of ovaries
- Childbirth and Natural Feeding
- Chemotherapy and Radiation
- Anti-Estrogen Medicines

- Autoimmune disorder
- Using Antihistamines

- Low level blood supply to vagina

Symptom of Reduced Vaginal Moisture:
If we discuss about the symptoms of low vaginal moisture, we will find that biological, hormonal and psychological issues affect it mostly.
The women with vaginal atrophy and reduced vaginal moisture may experience the following symptoms:
- Vaginal Itching
- Vaginal Burning
- Vaginal Irritation
- Painful Intercourse
- Discomfort during physical work
- Risk of Vaginal and Urinary tract infection
In case of low estrogen levels in women, then the symptoms are-
- Lack of natural vaginal secretions
- Vaginal Opening will be tightened
- Entrance of Vagina will be narrow
